Enzo Ferrari: the red and the black

The red Ferrari, an icon which fires the passions of millions of motor racing fans all over the world, was born from the dream of a little boy named Enzo. Fascinated by speed, and by the pioneering cars from the early twentieth century, Enzo Ferarri never ceased to nurture an almost sensual love of automobiles. He dreamt about them and drove them before he began building them. This passion led him to create the most enduring racing team in history, giving life to a provincial factory capable of producing increasingly fast and efficient cars, earning unforgettable victories throughout the world. He loved to define himself as a “stirrer of men”, and he was able both to choose the finest collaborators and recognise the talent of potential world champions, always striving for the next win, and suffering intensely every time a crash destroyed the fruit of his labours.

Enzo Ferrari won everything, but he had to endure a series of tragedies that would have broken the will of lesser men: the death of his father and his brother during the first world war, the loss of his beloved son Dino, and of many drivers who raced for him, including Alberto Ascari and Gilles Villeneuve, victims of terrible crashes.

A timeless object of desire, the favourite of the stars and a symbol of glamour, Ferrari is a true legend. But who is Enzo? Who is the man behind the dark glasses? Through autobiographical documents and a wealth of archive material, one of the most famous Italians ever tells the story of his career and his personal life.
