In the 1980s, the powerful, unstoppable wave of hip hop crossed the Atlantic Ocean and broke onto European shores. A few years later, rap began to take hold in Italy too, with the first Italian record being released in 1990. This saw the dawning of a golden age which saw the music move from the underworld of counterculture towards a much wider and varied audience, through masterpieces from the likes of Sangue Misto, the perennial Kaos and Colle der Fomento, up to the commercial success of the likes of Neffa, Frankie Hi-Nrg, Sottotono and Articolo 31, as well as the early work of a young Fabri Fibra. Then, suddenly, total darkness at the beginning of the new century. But why? A unique age of musical creativity recounted by the leading players themselves and narrated by a great freestyler who grew up and honed his skills with these musicians: Ensi.
